Presbyopia Is the Natural Decline of Your Eye’s Focusing Ability
Starting around age 40, the crystalline lens inside the eye gradually loses its elasticity, reducing its ability to adjust focus between near and far. This is presbyopia.
The symptoms usually show up as: needing to hold your phone farther away to read it clearly, menu text that’s too small to make out, or things going blurrier in dim lighting. Presbyopia isn’t a disease—it’s a normal part of physiological aging that nearly everyone goes through.
The solution to presbyopia isn’t as simple as “just get a pair of reading glasses.” Depending on your lifestyle and visual needs, there are three main optical directions to choose from.
Option 1: Single-Vision Reading Glasses (Near-Only Lenses)
The most traditional form of presbyopia glasses: a single-vision lens dedicated entirely to near vision. The whole lens carries a near-distance prescription, so you can read, look at your phone, or do close-up work clearly while wearing them—but you have to take them off to see anything at a distance.
Best for:
- Early-stage presbyopia, where only near vision is affected and distance vision doesn’t need correction
- Work that’s mostly close-up and doesn’t require frequently switching between near and far (e.g. handicrafts, reading)
- Budget-conscious situations that call for a low-cost solution
- People who don’t want to spend time adapting to a more complex lens design
Limitations:
- Distance vision is blurry while wearing them, requiring frequent putting on and taking off
- If you also have myopia or astigmatism, those need to be factored into the near-vision lens too—it’s not as simple as grabbing a generic pair off a convenience-store rack
Option 2: Office Lenses (Near-Focused Progressive Lenses)
Office lenses (also called computer lenses or intermediate-near lenses) are a “partial progressive” design—the lens covers intermediate distances (a computer screen, your desk) through near distances (documents, your phone), but doesn’t cover far distance.
They offer a wider field of view than standard progressive lenses because they don’t need to squeeze the entire far-to-near range into a single lens. That means less peripheral aberration and a relatively easier adaptation.
Best for:
- Work that’s mostly computer-based, spending long hours facing a screen each day
- Mostly office-based environments that don’t require frequently switching to outdoor distance vision
- People just starting to experience presbyopia who aren’t ready to take on a full-range progressive lens
- Anyone who already has a pair of distance glasses and wants a second, work-dedicated pair
Limitations:
- Not suited to walking outdoors, driving, or looking at distant objects
- Usually needs to be paired with a separate pair of distance glasses
Option 3: Progressive Multifocal Lenses
Progressive Addition Lenses (PALs) are currently the most widely used presbyopia solution. A single lens covers far, intermediate, and near vision zones from top to bottom, so in theory one pair of glasses can handle every distance.
They look no different from ordinary glasses, unlike traditional bifocal lenses with a visible dividing line.
Best for:
- An active lifestyle that requires frequently switching between far, intermediate, and near distances
- Older adults who want a single pair of glasses to cover all their daily visual needs
- Anyone who doesn’t want others to notice they’re wearing presbyopia correction
- People who have both myopia and presbyopia and need both corrected at once
What you should know:
Progressive lenses come with an adaptation period, usually 1–4 weeks. In the early stages, you may notice mild peripheral distortion and need to watch your footing while walking. This is a normal part of visual learning, and most people adapt successfully.
But if discomfort persists well beyond the adaptation period, the issue usually isn’t “you’re not suited to progressives”—it’s more often a problem somewhere in the fitting process: an inaccurate fitting height, an incorrectly set add power, or a frame that isn’t sitting properly. In that case, we recommend coming back in for a reassessment.
What Needs to Be Measured for a Presbyopia Fitting
Regardless of which presbyopia lens solution you choose, the following measurements are essential before fitting:
Add power (ADD)
Add power is the extra near-vision correction added on top of your distance prescription, and it reflects how advanced your presbyopia is. ADD typically ranges from +0.75 to +3.00, and it’s not simply a matter of “the older you are, the higher your ADD”—everyone’s accommodative ability declines at a different rate, so it needs to be measured individually.
Near pupillary distance
When looking at something up close, your eyes naturally turn slightly inward (convergence), so your pupillary distance is a bit smaller than it is at distance. Near PD needs to be measured separately, and it’s used to calculate the optical center position for near-vision lenses.
Fitting height (for progressive lenses)
The near-vision zone of a progressive lens sits in the lower part of the lens, and the fitting height determines exactly where that zone lands. Get the height wrong, and no matter how you tilt your head down, you won’t find the clear near-vision focal point—this is one of the most common fitting errors with progressive lenses.

Understanding the current state of your residual accommodative ability helps your optometrist determine the most suitable ADD value, as well as which lens design best fits your needs.

Q: Once presbyopia starts, do I have to get glasses right away?
Not necessarily right away. If early-stage presbyopia only causes fatigue in low light or after long reading sessions, you can hold off and observe for now. But if it’s already noticeably affecting your work efficiency or daily quality of life, getting fitted earlier can actually reduce the strain from your eyes overworking to compensate.
Q: Does presbyopia get worse the more you wear glasses?
Presbyopia naturally progresses with age, stabilizing at around age 60. Wearing glasses doesn’t accelerate presbyopia’s progression—in fact, avoiding glasses and forcing your eyes to keep straining tends to cause more visual fatigue.
Q: Are progressive lenses always better than single-vision reading glasses?
Not necessarily. Progressive lenses solve the problem of “needing to frequently switch between far, intermediate, and near distances.” If your daily life is relatively simple (for example, retired and mostly at home, with reading and watching TV as your main activities), a pair of distance glasses plus a pair of reading glasses can sometimes be more comfortable than progressives.
