What Is Pupillary Distance (PD)?

Pupillary Distance (PD) refers to the horizontal distance between the centers of your two pupils, measured in millimeters (mm). Most adults have a PD somewhere between 58 and 68mm, varying by gender and facial structure.

PD matters because every lens has an “optical center”—the single point on the lens where optical performance is best and distortion is lowest. When your glasses are fitted, this optical center has to align with your pupil. And to align it correctly, you first need to know where your pupil is and how far apart your two eyes sit—in other words, your PD.

Put simply: your prescription determines “how strong the lens grinding needs to be,” while PD determines “where that power needs to be positioned.” One governs strength, the other governs position—you can’t skip either one.

Why Does “Alignment” Matter So Much?

Imagine a pair of binoculars where the spacing between the two eyepieces doesn’t match the distance between your eyes—the image would look doubled, strained, and uncomfortable. Glasses aren’t quite that dramatic, but the same principle applies.

When a lens’s optical center isn’t aligned with your pupil—in other words, there’s an “offset”—light passes through the edge of the lens rather than the center, producing something called the prismatic effect: the light gets bent in an unintended way, and your eyes have to work harder to compensate. This is one of the optical reasons some people say their new glasses feel “off in a way they can’t quite explain.”

And it’s tied directly to your prescription. The higher your prescription, the bigger the prismatic effect from the same amount of misalignment. With a low prescription, a slight misalignment probably won’t be noticeable; with a high prescription, that same small offset gets magnified immediately. That’s why high-prescription fittings demand especially precise PD.

PD Isn’t Just One Number: Distance, Near, and Monocular

Many people assume PD is a single number, but it actually comes in several variants, and different lens purposes call for different values:

Taking one total number and dividing it by two can leave both sides misaligned for someone with slightly asymmetric features. Progressive multifocal lenses, which are especially sensitive to positioning, typically require monocular PD.

Q: Can I measure my own PD with a ruler in front of a mirror?

You can get a rough estimate, but it’s not recommended for actual fitting purposes—especially for high prescriptions or progressive lenses. Measuring it yourself is prone to error from measurement angle, eyes not being relaxed, and facial asymmetry. PD should be measured professionally by a licensed optometrist, who will distinguish between distance, near, and monocular PD as needed.

Q: Do I need to have my PD re-measured every time I get new glasses?

PD is a relatively stable physiological measurement that doesn’t change much after adulthood. But the frame size and lens type (single-vision, reading, progressive) can differ between fittings, which may call for a different PD value—progressive lenses in particular depend heavily on precise monocular PD and frame positioning. So re-confirming it each time is the safer approach.

Q: Which matters more, PD or the prescription?

Both matter, and they work together. Get the prescription right but the PD wrong, and the optical center is off from your pupil—still uncomfortable. Get the PD right but the prescription wrong, and you still won’t see clearly. One determines “how strong,” the other determines “where”—both need attention.

Q: Is a child’s PD the same as an adult’s?
