Same Glasses — So Why Do They Feel Different Here?

A lot of first-time customers at Beyond Visual Optometry say something like this when they pick up their new glasses: “These feel a lot more comfortable than my last pair, but I can’t quite say why.”

Not being able to put your finger on it is exactly the sign that the adjustment was done right — what you feel isn’t “an adjustment,” it’s just “how glasses are supposed to feel.”

Being able to point to exactly what’s wrong is usually a sign your previous pair had a problem: pressure marks on your nose, pain behind your ears, glasses sliding down constantly, things looking slightly off-center — none of that is about your face shape. It’s a frame that was never properly adjusted.


Frame Adjustment Is the Last Mile of Getting Fitted for Glasses

Getting the refraction right, calculating the correct prescription, choosing a good lens — all of that is necessary. But it’s still not enough.

If the frame doesn’t sit properly on your face, the lens’s optical center isn’t in the right position. An optical center off by just a few millimeters produces a prismatic effect — at best, unstable vision; at worst, dizziness and eye strain.

That’s exactly why the final step of getting fitted for glasses — the frame adjustment — is what determines whether a pair of glasses is actually comfortable to wear.


Our Hand Adjustment Process at Beyond Visual Optometry: 8 Steps, None Skipped

We use dedicated optical pliers and a precision screwdriver set, with each tool matched to a specific kind of adjustment. Different frame materials (pure titanium, beta titanium, acetate, TR90) each require a different touch — that’s a feel built up through experience, not something you learn from a manual.

Step One: Nose Pad Positioning

The height, spacing, and tilt of the nose pads directly determine how high the glasses sit on your face and how stable they are.

Get the nose pads wrong, and the lens’s optical center drifts out of place. A high nose bridge, a low one, an asymmetric one — each needs a different approach. There’s no universal answer, only the one that fits your particular face.

Step Two: Pantoscopic Tilt Adjustment

The ideal tilt angle between the frame and your face is generally somewhere between 8 and 12 degrees.

This angle affects visual quality when you’re looking down (reading, using your phone), and it matters especially for progressive lenses. For a lot of people who get dizzy wearing progressives, the real problem isn’t the prescription — it’s the pantoscopic tilt, because the lens’s addition zone no longer lines up with where you’re actually looking when you glance down.

Step Three: Face Form Angle Adjustment

The frame’s horizontal curve needs to match the contour of your face. People with more pronounced facial contours need a frame with a wider curve, or the optical quality on both sides of the lens suffers.

This step uses a heat gun paired with specialized pliers to soften the acetate, reshape it, and let it set as it cools. The force and angle have to be precise — over-bending leaves marks on the frame or causes stress cracks.

Step Four: Vertex Distance Confirmation

The distance from the back surface of the lens to the corneal apex — the standard value is about 12mm.

High myopia (600 degrees / -6.00D and above) is especially sensitive to vertex distance: a 2mm difference can shift the effective power by nearly 25 degrees. When you pick up your glasses, we confirm this measurement while you’re actually wearing them, and fine-tune the nose pads or frame tilt as needed to correct it.

Step Five: Temple Bend Point and Angle

Where and at what angle the temple bends behind your ear determines how securely the glasses stay on and how comfortable they feel behind the ear.

The bend point needs to land exactly in the natural groove behind your ear — not too far forward (the glasses will slide off) and not too far back (it’ll hurt behind your ear). The bend angle should let the temple sit evenly against your head, rather than gripping your ear through pressure alone.

Step Six: Frame Levelness

Viewed from the front, both sides of the frame need to be perfectly level. Faces are sometimes naturally a little asymmetric (this is completely normal — most people are), and in that case, the goal of the adjustment isn’t to make the frame “look level” — it’s to make sure the optical centers line up with each pupil individually.

We use a smartphone spirit-level app to confirm this step, rather than relying on the eye alone.

Step Seven: Overall Fit Confirmation

Once the adjustment is done, we have you actually wear the glasses and walk around while we check a few things:

  • Whether the glasses slide down when you look down
  • Whether they shift when you shake your head
  • Whether both sides of your nose bear pressure evenly (not just one side)
  • Whether there’s any pressure behind your ears

If any of these are off, we keep adjusting until they’re not.

Step Eight: A 2-Week Follow-Up After Pickup

After you start wearing your new glasses, the nose pads and temples will shift slightly to match your wearing habits. Come back within 2 weeks so we can check everything is still in the right position — this follow-up adjustment is free of charge.


These Tools Aren’t Just Sitting on a Shelf

Pictured above are the tools Beyond Visual Optometry uses every day for adjustments: various optical pliers (nose pad pliers, temple pliers, flat-nose pliers, round-nose pliers), a precision screwdriver set, and tweezers. Each tool has its own specific purpose — no single pair of pliers handles every adjustment.

A lot of optical shops “adjust” glasses by hand-bending them, or using one all-purpose pair of pliers. That might just about get by with a cheap frame, but with a pure titanium frame or a hand-crafted Japanese acetate frame, that approach easily leaves marks, causes stress deformation, or simply can’t get the fit right.

Having the right tool for the job is what lets us apply precise force and adjust a frame to the angle your face needs, without damaging the material.

Q: My glasses have gone crooked after wearing them for a while — can I bring them back for an adjustment? A: Yes. Frames shifting out of alignment from everyday wear, pressure, or the occasional bump is very common — it doesn’t mean your glasses are broken. Bring them in and let us take a look; it can usually be fixed on the spot.

Q: Will adjusting my glasses damage the frame? A: The right tool paired with the right technique won’t damage the frame material. We use tools and methods matched to each material (titanium, acetate, TR90, memory metal). Memory-metal frames have strong spring-back, and some adjustments are physically limited by that — we’ll always let you know upfront if that’s the case.

Q: I got my glasses fitted somewhere else — can I still bring them here for an adjustment? A: Yes. Bring them in and we’ll assess how far we can adjust them and let you know. If the underlying issue turns out to be the prescription or fitting parameters, we’ll tell you that directly too.
